Digital Literacy

Goulburn Ovens TAFE

A needs assessment identified an urgent gap in student digital literacy. Teachers reported an increasing amount of time was spent assisting students to overcome their lack of basic digital literacy than on the course content.

To address this need, five modules were created to build students’ capabilities. The modules are guided by the Australian Digital Capability Framework (ADCF). Following successful completion of each module, the credentials will display on a learner’s profile in Moodle and will also be transportable via a digital backpack.

The titles relate to clusters of ability in the ADCF. Within the badges are four to five skill sets for users to accomplish. For example, one of the Digital Explorer interactive components includes practicing placing a curser accurately where the user plays a game titled ‘whack-a-mole’ to identify icons that relate to navigating online (eg, browsers, print, and save icons).

In the final evaluation phase of each module, student focus groups are employed to ensure the module functions smoothly and to identify areas for improvement.
